- History of Cross-Rip
History abounds in this area. The battle of West Canada Valley
took place right here during the Revolutionary War. It was right out
by your front door that Colonel Marinus Willett with a group of
patriot soldiers defeated major Ross’ army and where Captain Walter
Butler of the British Army was killed. The latter was infamous at the
time because he led the Cherry Valley Massacre against the Colonists a
few years before. This action transpired after General Herkimer
stopped the advance of the British Army at Oriskany. This represented
one of the last battles in the Mohawk Valley and was the beginning of
the end of the Revolutionary War.
It was right here, between Herkimer and Utica, the Valley and
surrounding area was populated by believers, willing to trust that
they would endure. They were driven here by politicians and poverty,
and hoped for better times. They survived in spite of the fact that
they were actually pawns, acting as buffers against the Natives and
the French. Today the New York State Thruway which runs along the
Mohawk River, leads one through some of the most beautiful land,
nowhere else will you find roadside hayfields blackened by turkeys,
scrub brush teeming with deer so that all must travel on alert.
For more than 40 years a seaplane pilot has been located in Inlet,
New York. To see the Adirondacks with Jim Payne is to discover it for
the first time. He has made the inaccessible reaches of the wild
forest accessible to countless passengers. Scenic tours offer breath
taking views of the Adirondack Mountains and lakes all while
experiencing the takeoff and landing of a seaplane.
