Fall Activities

  • Autumn Leaves
In the fall, almost every color of the spectrum can be seen when the leaves are changing. This is when the antiques shops from Blue Mountain to Long Lake have their open houses with reduced prices, and the dining in the restaurants is enhanced by the cooler weather. And of course the sunsets at Cross-Rip are beautiful all year long.

  • Hunting
Hunting starts in the fall and the Adirondacks have become a hunters paradise. From big game such as deer and bear to turkey. Imagine arriving back at the cottage after a long days trek for a hot shower and a cold beer on the front porch watching the sun set over the lake.

  • Adirondack Train
Although the Adirondack Train runs most of the year some of there most spectacular rides are in the fall. A train ride though the Adirondacks with all the colors of the leaves and where the leaves have fallen the viability is almost endless.

  • Fishing
The Salmon river is just about an hour away and over flowing with some of the best salmon fishing in the world. The rivers, creeks and lakes abound with Bass, Perch, Pickerel, Bullhead and Trout. Fly-fishing is an important outdoor sport here. Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout are truly sought after in the waters just out side the Cottage door and most of the creeks and rivers very near by. The West Canada Creek is famous for various trout, as are its tributaries such as Black Creek. There are parts of the West Canada Creek that is open year round for trout fishing.

  • Local Events
Local Events that occur every fall, just to mention a few, The Woodsmen's Field Days, Bouckville Antique Show, and the Remsen Barn Fest.

  • Walking & Hiking
A walk in the woods will offer exposure to flower and fauna, and various wild life. You will find Maple, Ash, Cedar and Pine with its ever-fragrant odor. Hiking up the West Canada Creek to its source, some 50 miles north will take you through some of the more dense forests in the Adirondacks. Some thirty miles from the cottage, you may climb Bald Mountain, one of the challenging climbs in the North East. Upon reaching the summit, you will view a panorama of the Adirondacks, which includes the Fulton Chain of Lakes. Hiking, backpacking and overnight camping in the Adirondacks is without parallel. The only sound to be experienced will be from nature or the nocturnal wild life. And of course you will not want to miss the sunsets at Cross-Rip. The setting sun across the lake is beautiful all year long.

  • Boating
Sailing on Hinckley will run the gamut from being in the doldrums on a quiet sunny day, to running a beam reach before the wind on a good chop.
Motor boating on the lake will satisfy the exploratory nature whereby you will be able to venture into every bay and inlet in sight. While in the motorboat you may explore the island on the lake, and even go ashore for a picnic.
Canoeing will slow the pace, but will provide plenty of exercise, at the same time, hearken back to a form of transportation our forebears had. Nothing more spectacular than a canoe ride as the sun rises
How about row boating. Take everyone for a relaxing row boat ride anytime of the day. This end of the lake is normally calm and has very little boat traffic. Go exploring...

  • Mountain Biking
The Mountain Bike trails are without end, and can carry you through areas where tanning leather was done, maple syrup gathering was tried to replace the sugar that was imported from the West Indies, or the remnants of grist mills can be viewed.

  • Golf
Quiet golf courses are nearby, where you can hone your sport to perfection without being rushed by players driving up on you.

  • Miscellanies
Exquisite dining and shopping is also nearby, where antiques from the past can be purchased. Horseback riding for the whole family is just a short distance, where trail riding is a specialty.
Cooking on an open fire is always available, and roasting marshmallows on an open fire by the water, while singing songs, surely induces a good night's sleep.

  • Quiet Time Activities
When the weather becomes inclement, you can always read an Adirondack thriller, such as an “American Tragedy”, or “Adirondack French Louie” you will realize why so many of the affluent would spend their leisure time in this area which is deemed, “forever wild”.

  • With these diverse options for entertainment, you will be spending a vacation that the family will remember for a lifetime.
